I’m of the opinion that the majority of this world is filled with self-serving, uncaring and down-right inconsiderate people. The sad reality is there are more than enough stories going around to back up my claim. You can often find them in the legal system. Apparently an Illinois appeals court recently ruled that a woman is within her rights to sue a dead teenager's estate for injuries she received by his flying body parts (sorry folks, there's really no pleasant way to put that). It seems the 18 year old boy was running across the tracks to catch another train but didn't make it. Let this be a lesson to everyone - NEVER RUN ACROSS THE TRACKS OF A BUSY TRAIN STATION! He was hit by an oncoming train going…
As the holiday season comes to a close, the start of a new year is on the horizon and it's time for our New Year's Resolution. For many of us December 31st is synonymous with gatherings in Time Square - where a star-studded ball makes its 70 foot decent before thousands of onlookers cheer “Happy New Year!” at the stroke of midnight. But the start of a new year should mean more than just purchasing a new desk calendar. It should be a time to reflect on the previous year and re-evaluate where we’re going in the future. The beginning of a new year has become one of the world's oldest holidays. It all started with the Babylonians, who first celebrated the day some 4,000 years ago. And though the…
Did you ever really think a picture is worth a thousand words? Well, they might be if pictures were a luxury you never had around. Television news programs are typically comprised of an endless array of negative story lines, which bring down even the most optimistic of souls. Even the weather report can be cause for anxiety at times. Beloved neighbor Fred Rogers once said that “The media shows the tiniest percentage of what people do. There are millions and millions of people doing wonderful things all over the world, and they’re generally not the ones being touted in the news.” Back in 2006, CBS news featured a story about “people doing wonderful things.” It was titled “Precious Images Give Orphans Hope” – the story of how one man’s compassion…
Take a look at your own life and ask yourself, what or who is on my priority lists? Our lives seem filled to capacity with a plethora of errands, chores and commitments which often pull us in different directions — robbing us of the more memorable moments life has to offer. In short we prioritize our lives based upon what we believe to be important and inadvertently forget about the people we always assume will be around when our priority lists are finally complete. It’s funny how our priority lists seem to focus so much on taking care of responsibilities, yet pay little attention to taking care of the people who provide our lives with meaning. Imagine turning off the television and tuning out all distractions to interact with that…
I've been thinking a lot about our government lately and not unlike most people, I've had about enough of them. Frankly, our current form of government had its shot at trying to better our country, but all it's done is managed to tarnish the image of a land that was once the most admired and respected country on earth. I might be an American, but I can't honestly say that I'm not proud of where America is going. I guess what bothers me most is how politicians, who are mainly comprised of wealthy business men and women, haven't the slightest idea what it's like to live as an average, ordinary citizen. You certainly wouldn't go and ask a pastry chef to change the spark plugs in your car, so why…
