Good teachers often leave a lasting impact on your life

Information & Education, Life & Living, Youth
“Good” Teachers by Charles Saydah is an editorial which surprised me. I suspected it would be much of the same – lumping a sea of respectable teachers in a pool of underachievers. But I’m happy to admit I was wrong. Saydah speaks of his English teacher back in the New York Public School System, Jacob Solovay, as “A supremely controlled man, his knowledge, kindness, generosity, supportiveness and patience appealed to his students. Our school had created a sophomore English class to develop writers and editors for the school paper. It must have been the ideal class for a teacher: motivated, smart kids engaged in a creative, mercantile task. As an adolescent, I sensed that it would be impossible to be a bad teacher under such conditions.” He and a few…

The New Jersey shore was like taking a trip back in time

Life & Living, Youth
I recently took a trip down to the New Jersey shore – a rare occurrence over the last few years. You see as a child that was where my entire extended family vacationed. It was inexpensive and close to home, which made it an ideal choice for a modest family to escape the chaos of life. Stepping foot on the Seaside Heights boardwalk at the New Jersey shore was like stepping back in time. Truthfully it had been some twenty-five years since I last walked up and down the strip, and now at 37 years old, I could see that while much had changed, so much more had stayed the same. Thousands of deck boards, which lined the pathway, seemed as though they hadn’t been touched since they were installed…

Kids will be kids, but they learn much of their behavior from parents

Information & Education, Youth
Some people say that “kids will be kids” whenever the subject of bullying fellow classmates comes about. But what do you say when children are bullying a 68-year-old grandmother? Well that’s just what happened to Karen Klein, a school bus monitor in Greece, New York. Yet again technology (in the wrong hands) caught the entire event on camera, which was eventually posted online - going viral in less than 24 hours. Tell me again why technology is a great thing for children to have? I watched the video in sheer disgust and horror. On this blog, I refuse to repeat any of the cruel and utterly heartless statements this group of young boys spouted at Klein, who bravely tried to ignore the torment. Follow the link below if you’re interested.…

Graduates never let your ego prevent you from accepting a helping hand

Information & Education, Youth
For all the graduates. Well, another school year is almost over - to the cheers and delight of children and teenagers all across the country. It’s been 19 years since I proudly graduated from high school with family and friends looking on.  Now instead of referring to myself as a “teenager” or “college graduate,” I find myself using terms like “husband” and “homeowner.” Boy, life certainly has a way of escaping you, doesn’t it? Over the last 19 years, I’ve gained invaluable lessons and have come to understand this: in our youth we’re determined to prove to everyone that we’re independent and wiser than our years might suggest. But as I sit here today at the age of 37, I can tell current graduates that there is no greater value…

Standardized testing shouldn’t be the only measure of knowledge

Information & Education, Youth
There’s been a lot of debate surrounding how to measure a student’s success in the classroom – standardized testing being the only answer anyone can seem to come up with. I’d like to quote the National Research Council (NRC) of the National Academy of Sciences, which issued a report from its Board on Testing and Assessment. “…a test score is not an exact measure of a student’s knowledge or skills…no single test score can be considered a definitive measure of a student’s knowledge.” And yet America continues to view standardized testing as the only determination on how effective a teacher has been in the classroom or how intelligent and advanced a student might be. I consider myself fairly intelligent, yet I can tell you without fail that I’m a terrible…
