Immigration in America Unites Us More Than it Divides

Immigration in America Unites Us More Than it Divides

Information & Education
There are many strong opinions encircling the issue of immigration in America, with many unquestionably on one side or the other. But unfortunately, there's no middle ground on the subject. I suppose the best place to start then would be to provide a credible definition for immigration. From Britannica.com, immigration is "The process through which individuals become permanent residents or citizens of another country. Historically, the process of immigration has been of great social, economic, and cultural benefit to states. The immigration experience is long and varied and has in many cases resulted in the development of multicultural societies; many modern states are characterized by a wide variety of cultures and ethnicities that have derived from previous periods of immigration." What strikes me most about the definition above are the following…

American Extremists are Making Hopelessness a Way of Life

American Extremists are Making Hopelessness a Way of Life

Information & Education, Life & Living
In this blog, I’ve always tried to inspire readers to question their habitual way of thinking and instead try to see things through the lens of compassion, equality, respect, and love. But when it comes to the topic of American extremists, my spirit is broken, and I struggle to find anything hopeful, meaningful, or positive to share about the United States of America. Though let’s be honest, there’s nothing “united” about this country any longer. I pivot back and forth between emotions of anger and frustration to sadness and despair. I try to understand why Senators aspire to such a lofty, impactful, and revered position in the United States government only to show their loyalty to American extremists who care little about anyone’s agenda beyond their own. Today, I feel…

To Appreciate Food You Need to Remember It’s a Blessing

To Appreciate Food You Need to Remember It’s a Blessing

Information & Education
At any given time, many of us are fortunate to be able to visit our refrigerator or pantry and find an overabundance of food options to satisfy our appetites and fulfill the nutritional needs our bodies require. But did you ever ask yourself whether you appreciate food? FeedingAmerica.org reports that more than 38 million people in the United States, including 12 million children, are food insecure, which means there’s “a lack of consistent access to enough food for every person in a household to live an active, healthy life.” For those 38 million people, they appreciate food much differently than we do. When your next meal is often shrouded in uncertainty, you appreciate food more than most. Especially those of us who can quickly and easily rummage through our overstocked refrigerators and…

Conforming Thoughts are Holding Americans Prisoner

Conforming Thoughts are Holding Americans Prisoner

Information & Education
The prominent headlines thus far in 2022 are troubling for so many of us. For all the progress America and its citizens have made over the last 246 years, such headlines seem to contradict such progress as we seem to be trapped in a swirling sea of conforming thoughts. It’s been 246 years since the founding of this great nation, and here we are, still confronting issues that have long plagued our society without resolve. Racial prejudice, economic imbalance, political irresponsibility, women’s inequality, homophobia, propaganda, and even restricting one’s ability to vote makes one question just how far has America really progressed? The commonality between today’s thinking and hundreds of years ago remains the same – one must adhere to conforming thoughts. Merriam-Webster defines “conforming” as “acting in accordance with prevailing…

Our Engagement on Social Media has Come to Define Us

Our Engagement on Social Media has Come to Define Us

Information & Education, Youth
Years ago, face-to-face conversations allowed individuals to connect and determine what kind of person they were interacting with. Their personality, authenticity, compassion, political views, empathy, beliefs, even pastimes. But today, our engagement on social media has come to define us with the swipe of a finger or scroll of a mouse. Let me give you an example. I recently saw a post from a former co-worker on LinkedIn, which inappropriately mocked President Biden while praising other politicians' racist and undisciplined remarks from the likes of Marjorie Taylor Greene and Lauren Boebert.  While I didn't spend a great deal of time with this former co-worker, he was usually known to be very quiet, humble, and hard-working, revealing very little about himself or his beliefs, so this post was somewhat surprising to…
