The only sure thing in life is everything must change

Musician and lyricist Bernard Ighner is credited with composing the song, “Everything Must Change”.

Many performers have recorded the poignant song over the years – my personal favorites coming from R&B songstress Oleta Adams and Broadway veteran Betty Buckley.

Here’s a sampling of the lyrics:

Everything must change, nothing stays the same
Everyone will change, no one stays the same

The young become the old, and mysteries do unfold
‘Cause that’s the way of time, nothing and no one goes unchanged

There are not many things in life you can be sure of, except
Rain comes from the clouds, sun lights up the sky
And hummingbirds do fly

This song often inspires me, especially of late, for I often tend to forget that nothing stays the same in life – regardless of how much we’d like to cling to the past. Humans crave security and the comfortable lifestyle it provides. But it’s that very security which often places limitations on our life.

But change always gets a bad rap, doesn’t it? Change is something we should look forward to with hope and possibility – not dread and fear. Yes, change can be uncomfortable and even burdensome at times. But it’s the only way to better ourselves, our lives and our society.
