Where you sleep is something you should never take for granted

Have you ever paused from the daily chaos of life to think about where you sleep?

I know that sounds strange but stay with me for a minute here.

This week, I’ve been battling a head cold – you know, the kind that makes your sinuses feel like they’re on fire and everything you eat just tastes bad.

Sleeping? Well, that’s a fun task. You raise you head up so high with a series of pillows that you might as well be sitting up. And forget about finding a comfortable position as you flip from one side to the other savoring your one clear nostril and hoping the other miraculously clears up.

Something else happens when I’m sick like this – my snoring becomes unbearable. Knowing that my beautiful wife needed to get up and out the door early the next morning, I decided to spare her the sleepless night and went to sleep somewhere else.

We live in a ranch house – the master bedroom on one side and three bedrooms on the other. It’s the perfect floor plan for a husband trying to relocate his clogged schnozzola away from someone lucky enough to be comfortably asleep.

As I said, there are three spare bedrooms in our house – two have queen sized beds and one has a three-person couch.

As I walked down the darkened hallway at 12:15 AM, my gaze bounced from one door to the next as I tried to decide where I might get the best night’s sleep as though I were playing the bonus round on Let’s Make A Deal.

Bedroom #1’s mattress is soft and cushy like sleeping on a cloud. Bedroom #2’s is a little firmer, great if your body needs some additional support. Bedroom #3’s is a couch, and while comfortable, not ideal for anything more than an afternoon cat nap. I choose #1.

Now let’s go back to my original question from above.

Have you ever paused from the daily chaos of life to think about where you sleep?

Even though my head was clogged like cement and it was now probably 12:30 AM once I settled in, the idea of “where you sleep” kept popping into my head.

On any given day, I have not one but four places I can choose to sleep – always the perfect temperature whether it’s the heart of the summer or the snowy-days of winter.

It truly humbled me, for not everyone has the ability – no, the luxury – to choose where they sleep so comfortably and with so many options.

Where you sleep. It’s one of the most basic necessities we need in life. How often we all take that luxury for granted while competing in a world judged on material possessions and status which is meaningless.

The older I get the more I’m beginning to realize that it’s the most basic necessities we should be thankful for and cherish always. Necessities that are so easily taken for granted by everyone but those who don’t possess them.
