Where has the time gone – life never slows down for anyone

Where has the time gone? Another Thanksgiving is in the history books and I’ll admit I’m a bit of a hypocrite.

I’m quick to point out that it’s far too early for Christmas decorations, and yet as I write this post, my own Christmas tree is meticulously decorated and illuminated in my front window. It had to go up at some point, right?

Time goes by so very quickly. I feel like not so long ago I was complaining about how hot it was outside, and now the air has turned cold and holiday songs and movies can be seen and heard 24 hours a day.

My sister-in-law and her husband live in the mountainous state of Colorado, and just a few short weeks ago they welcomed an adorable little boy named Max into the world. Talk about where has the time gone – it seemed like only yesterday when they told us of their joyous news and now he’s here in person. Amazing really.

The wonders of technology and the internet have allowed us to watch his development over the last few weeks – noticing subtle changes with each video chat.

He’s so reliant on his mom and dad at this age – not unlike any other baby would be.

At times I just stare at him in wonder knowing that he’s at the beginning of his life – a life filled with hope, promise and opportunity.

I’d be a liar to say that I’m not jealous of Max from time to time for the seemingly endless supply of blank pages his life now affords him.

At the age of 37, I’m old enough to look back on my years and see all the mistakes and missed opportunities which are now part of my history book. If only we could start our lives a little smarter, then maybe the early parts wouldn’t always be filled with such regret.

But I’m a firm believer that everything in life happens for a reason, and so many things in my life would not be as they are now without those mistakes and missed opportunities like falling in love with my wife, meeting her sister and now little Max.

While my wife and I never wanted children of our own, it will be very interesting and enjoyable I’m sure to watch little Max as he embraces himself and all of the challenges he will undoubtedly have along the way.

But he’s already got one important thing for his journey – two parents who have nothing but unconditional love and support to provide him along the way.

The sad reality is that time rarely slows down for anything. So enjoy this time little Max, and you too mom and dad. Because before you know it he too will be wondering where has the time gone.
