“When you sit tranquilly, you set a great example to the people who rush around in panic and thus you show the crazy waves the beauty of being a calm lake!” ― Mehmet Murat ildan
At the end of tonight’s yoga class, I found myself lost in the waves – the sound of them that is.
As a sequence of turquoise-blue lights danced around the studio in front of me, waves continued to crash upon the shoreline – providing the perfect soundtrack to further solidify my tranquility. The always calming and inspiring words of my instructor further lulled me into a state of complete serenity (thanks Courtney).
Drifting in and out of consciousness, I felt safe in my surroundings and completely comfortable with the spirit living deep inside of me. How truly blessed I felt to experience such a feeling of inner peace after the stress of a busy Monday.
The waves began to chronicle periods in my life – igniting cherished memories I hadn’t thought about in many years.
I remembered building sand castles with my plastic bucket and shovel on the beaches of New Jersey – excited as the waves inched closer and closer to where I was sitting.
Dining at an outdoor restaurant in Hawaii while on my honeymoon, where there was no need for background music as the sound of the waves provided the perfect ambiance.
Or watching the moonlight reflect upon the ocean with some friends as we walked for what seemed like forever along the shoreline.
The sound of my classmates moving about the studio disturbed my inner solitude and awakened me from this most beautiful rest. For a brief second, I had forgotten where I was, but quickly regained my sense of reality as idle chatter began to drown out the waves.
I’m always amazed how powerful our senses are. How they can transport us to another place and time with something as simple as a sound or a smell. Something as profound as waves.
