Set goals – but don’t forget about people

“It’s good to have an end to journey toward; but it’s the journey that matters in the end.”Ursula K. Le Guin

Humanity spends a great deal of time with their sights set on goals.

It drives our decisions, motivation and seemingly begins to take on a life of its own.

But as we go about our days, striving and pining for the goals we assign a great deal of importance to, far too often we overlook the journey and the realities going on right before our eyes.

Many times those “realities” come in the form of people.

Perhaps it’s a spouse who supports their mates career aspirations without fail or question – standing on the sidelines hoping their efforts and sacrifices will be noticed and appreciated.

Maybe it’s a child who longs to spend a Saturday afternoon playing in the park with a parent who’s often absent during the work week, and still working on the weekends.

Or it just might be the elderly grandmother who finds herself alone day after day – praying one of her grandchildren, who say they’re always too busy, will remember how much she enjoys their company.

Goals are an important part of progress in any facet of life. But at some point our goals overshadow the people who journey along with us. While there’s always another opportunity to pursue our unfulfilled goals, relationships rarely provide such occasion.

Dr. Seuss once remarked, quite profoundly, “Sometimes you will never know the value of something until it becomes a memory.”

Remember, achieving your goals in life won’t really mean much if the person you can’t wait to share it with is already gone.
