“Never be in a hurry; do everything quietly and in a calm spirit. Do not lose your inner peace for anything whatsoever, even if your whole world seems upset.” – St. Francis De Sales
My wife is truly an amazing person for many reasons, but the quality she possesses that I’m most envious of is her ability to continually maintain a calm spirit.
Even during times of crisis or stress, she somehow manages to acknowledge her feelings and compartmentalize them constructively before they rob her earthly life of valuable time.
Me? Well, I’m just the opposite. Maybe that’s why we’ve been so happily married for the last 14 years.
Over the years I’ve come to realize that far too often we’re our own worst enemy.
It’s easy to say that this person made us feel this way, but the truth of the matter is the only person who can make you feeling anything is you. We’re quick to react to situations, rather than remain quiet and in a calm spirit – sacrificing logic and reason and completely losing the inner peace which allows us to go through life more joyful than bitter.
There will always be struggles to deal with when we interact with our fellow men and women traveling down the same path as we are. But it’s important to stop yourself, examine the situation, accept what your feeling and move on.
While I know it sounds easy in theory, I readily admit it’s not. But when I have in fact kept my focus on a calm spirit and inner peace, suddenly you realize that instead of choosing to be upset over one situation or another we can choose to be accepting.
Ralph Waldo Emerson once remarked, “Nothing can bring you peace but yourself.”
