Negative thoughts and feelings are not always so easy to control

Life & Living
“The goal isn’t to get rid of all your negative thoughts and feelings; that’s impossible. The goal is to change your response to them.”  - marcandangel.com For those who possess a natural tendency for optimism during adversity, for positivity during times of struggle, for courage when faced with unforeseen circumstances - I applaud you. If I’ve read one study I’ve read hundreds proclaiming that some people are simply chemically wired that way. In a sense, it’s part of their overall personality – an energy which effortlessly flows throughout their body and is almost as basic to them as breathing. I’m NOT one of those people. While I’m certainly not at the far end of the spectrum, I have a propensity to focus on what’s going wrong, rather than seeing everything…

Love lives on – sometimes we just need a little reminder

Love & Relationships
“Those we love are never really lost to us - we feel them in so many special ways. Through friends they always cared about and dreams they left behind. In beauty that they added to our days...in words of wisdom we still carry with us and memories that never will be gone. Those we love are never really lost to us - for everywhere their special love lives on.” - Amanda Bradley This Christmas, while strolling through a store to buy my wife a new pair of slippers, I stumbled upon something quite unexpected. It was a stand-alone plaque which read “Soulmates” across the top, with a picture frame inset right beneath it. On the left-hand side read the following quote: “Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.…

Eulogy – what will people say about you at the end of your life?

Life & Living, Love & Relationships
"No eulogy is due to him who simply does his duty and nothing more." - Saint Augustine Last week, Ira Albom passed away. Many might be wondering who this man is and why his death deserves mentioning in my post. Admittedly, I’ve never met him and would otherwise be completely oblivious to his passing if not for being an admirer (and social media follower) of his son – writer Mitch Albom, the author of the revered novel Tuesdays With Morrie. While the passing of Ira Albom is an unfortunate reality of being almost 90 years old, what profoundly struck me was the eulogy his son wrote upon his father’s passing. Words so powerful they brought tears to my eyes, an ache in my heart and a flood of memories swirling…

Nothing changes when you’re not willing to make a change

Life & Living
“When you're finished changing, you're finished.” - Benjamin Franklin On my morning commute to work, I often find myself stuck at the same red light as I exit the highway. On the right-hand corner resides a local Ford dealership, with a digital billboard streaming car specials, and of all things, inspirational messages which seem to change weekly. During this particular week the message read, “Nothing changes if nothing changes.” I appreciated the simplicity of this message, and the profoundness five little words could possess. The sights and sounds of the season serve as a personal reminder that life is not static. If nothing changes, then our lives would never change as the years seem to race on by like an out of control locomotive. Admittedly, some of those changes are beyond…

Secret of giving – what are you teaching your children?

Generosity & Kindness, Youth
“Think of giving not as a duty but as a privilege.” - John D. Rockefeller Jr. I think Rockefeller’s quote truly defines the secret of giving. For if you have the privilege to give to someone less fortunate, that means your life is blessed with abundance. But where do we learn this secret of giving from? I think it’s important to realize that some individuals (okay, a lot of individuals) simply don’t possess any genuine compassion towards others. Their view of life is so narrowly focused on their own agenda that they rarely, if ever, consider doing something for the betterment of someone else. The secret of giving is truly lost on them. But I was given a little hope last night. Hope that there are still people out there who…
