Nothing changes when you’re not willing to make a change

Life & Living
“When you're finished changing, you're finished.” - Benjamin Franklin On my morning commute to work, I often find myself stuck at the same red light as I exit the highway. On the right-hand corner resides a local Ford dealership, with a digital billboard streaming car specials, and of all things, inspirational messages which seem to change weekly. During this particular week the message read, “Nothing changes if nothing changes.” I appreciated the simplicity of this message, and the profoundness five little words could possess. The sights and sounds of the season serve as a personal reminder that life is not static. If nothing changes, then our lives would never change as the years seem to race on by like an out of control locomotive. Admittedly, some of those changes are beyond…

Secret of giving – what are you teaching your children?

Generosity & Kindness, Youth
“Think of giving not as a duty but as a privilege.” - John D. Rockefeller Jr. I think Rockefeller’s quote truly defines the secret of giving. For if you have the privilege to give to someone less fortunate, that means your life is blessed with abundance. But where do we learn this secret of giving from? I think it’s important to realize that some individuals (okay, a lot of individuals) simply don’t possess any genuine compassion towards others. Their view of life is so narrowly focused on their own agenda that they rarely, if ever, consider doing something for the betterment of someone else. The secret of giving is truly lost on them. But I was given a little hope last night. Hope that there are still people out there who…

Better days may have already begun

Life & Living
“Don’t ever lose hope because better days will come.” - Ana Monnar It was probably the first full week of November when I began noticing Christmas lights strewn across trees, shrubs and rooflines – proudly illuminated before the Thanksgiving turkey makes its debut. While retailers began installing their Christmas displays back in late September, this was by far the earliest I’d witnessed homeowners, from various neighborhoods, decking the halls before Black Friday. At first, I was annoyed by the complete disregard for the celebration of Thanksgiving. While I recognize the motivation of retailers, I find it difficult to understand how anyone could enjoy their Thanksgiving feast with a Christmas tree shining brightly in the front window. It wasn’t until I was driving home last night, mesmerized by Christmas lights sparkling…

Growing older – the only down side is you’re running out of time

Life & Living
“Know that you are the perfect age. Each year is special and precious, for you shall only live it once. Be comfortable with growing older.” – Louise Hay Growing older has been weighing heavy on my mind of late, but NOT for the superficial reasons you may be suspecting. Yes, my hair is going grey and isn’t quite as thick as it used to be. Yes, it’s getting harder and harder to lose those pesky few pounds even with diet and exercise. And after a day of intense yard work, my body now aches in places it never did before. I’m willing to accept all that (okay, maybe not losing my hair) as typical signs of the aging process. But what I find myself struggling with is my own mortality,…

Be there for someone – the gift so many of us have on our list

Love & Relationships
“Always be there for the person who is always there for you.” – Unknown On a recent night of channel surfing, I heard the following sentiment: “As we grow older, our Christmas lists get smaller and we find out that the things we really want can’t be bought.” For many, that list would include unconditional love, acceptance, commitment, compassion and having someone be there to share in your life. “Buying” something is an easy task – finding a person possessing all those characteristics is invaluable and difficult. But not impossible. As I started writing this post, it reminded me of a song I always find myself coming back to year after year without fail – Cyndi Lauper’s 1983 hit Time After Time. It’s one of those songs which often leaves me…
