Genuine character is lost in a sea of sameness

“The best index to a person’s character is how he treats people who can’t do him any good, and how he treats people who can’t fight back.”

Abigail Van Buren

A person possessing genuine character is hard to come by in society.

Often ego, competitiveness and insecurities make it nearly impossible to encounter individuals on our daily journey who retain either of the unique qualities I reference above.

Sameness is easily achieved

You begin to realize the reality of this when you find yourself in new surroundings and begin to understand how society is inundated with carbon copies. Everyone is trying to be what’s fashionable and popularly accepted in society, leaving those searching for originality wandering through a sea of clones.

Perhaps what’s most troubling about all of this is if you’ve been fortunate enough to find such a genuine individual of character, and sadly they’re no longer a part of your daily life.

No longer there to provide unconditional support, love and compassion on any given day; no longer there to remind you that being a person of character is better than a person of sameness; no longer there to experience the comradery which reminds you of your purpose in this life.

This unknown quote speaks volumes: “Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.”

Genuine individuals possessing great character may be hard to come by, but are not impossible to find. They’re out there searching for the same qualities in a relationship that you are. Unfortunately they’re lost in a sea of clones, and it’s up to you to sort through them to find what you’ve been longing for.

RJ Palacio once wrote, “Courage. Kindness. Friendship. Character. These are the qualities that define us as human beings, and propel us, on occasion, to greatness.”
