Reaching out to others should be an act of selflessness

“Reaching out and valuing other lives is the only way to be trusted and never forgotten.”
― Isabella Koldras

When you’re reaching out to someone in your life (a friend, a family member, a colleague) how often is that communication selfless?

Are you reaching out to discuss a situation or circumstance in your life, or are you genuinely making contact to show they are trusted and never forgotten?

The way I see it, there are listeners and talkers in society – and lately I feel as though I’ve been straddling the line between the two.

What I’ve discovered is that being the listener comes with drawbacks. The main one being when you’re reaching out to the talker for a comforting and safe environment to share your feelings, they’re rarely around to provide support.

Shannon L. Alder reminds us that, “One of the most important things you can do on this earth is to let people know they are not alone.”

But how else should someone feel when there’s not a mutual exchange of care and support being offered?

When you think about all the technology in the world today – all designed for people to feel more connected – you’d think that any and all feelings of loneliness would cease to exist.

But those technologies can sometimes exacerbate the issue when you try to engage with others who are only interested in the funny cartoons you share on Facebook – nothing more.

We’re all super busy in life – another thing technology hasn’t seemed to slow down.

But isn’t it our responsibility as humans to reach out to another person when there are no personal gains for us? To remind people they are never forgotten.

Germany Kent writes, “Reach out and help others. If you have the power to make someone happy, do it. Be a vessel, be the change, be the difference, or be the inspiration. Shine your light as an example. The world needs more of that.”
