Comfort zones prevent us from truly living

“Living in your comfort zone can even be more stressful than pursuing your dream. So why are you accustomed to your stagnant life?”

Oscar Bimpong

Far too many of us live in a bubble, otherwise known as our comfort zone.

We like what’s familiar, what makes us feel at ease – in a word, secure. But change is difficult if you never step outside the familiarity of your environment and try something new.

I know people who will only dine at the same restaurant, vacation to the same destinations (even the same hotels), and choose to spend their lives living in the same place they were born and raised.

While they probably don’t realize it, they’re an incredibly difficult group of people to engage with in a conversation.

Their comfort zone has become a disadvantage to them – forcing them to form opinions and judgments about the world around them that simply don’t exist. What this delusion does allow them to do is maintain this psychological state of fear.

Is that really living?

In Roy T. Bennett’s book, The Light in the Heart, he says, “Do not lie to yourself. We have to be honest about what we want and take risks rather than lie to ourselves and make excuses to stay in our comfort zone.”

And that’s what so many people do. They concoct one negative response after another, which allows them to rationalize why staying in familiar territory in ideal. Oftentimes these responses are fictional, even fantastical, which can be frustrating for the listener who knows better.

While there are times I myself enjoy the safety and familiarity of my comfort zone, I’ve also seen how breaking away from it can bring about positive change and new experiences. And isn’t that what life is all about?

Manoj Arora writes, “Coming out of your comfort zone is tough in the beginning, chaotic in the middle and awesome in the end…because in the end, it shows you a whole new world!!! Make an attempt…”
